Alum Creek and Cave Trail is a popular 2.7 mile loop. You walk along the river and over a bridge through a cliff undercut. After that you head to the top of that cliff to get an aerial view of the river and forest.
Relax in the woods by the river in one of the 65 campsites (35 with electricity). All campers have access to bathhouses with toilets, showers, and a laundry area. The campgrounds also have a fun playground for the kiddos.
Audra has a roped off swimming area that is safe for all ages! If you're looking to avoid the crowds, Audra is known for having many "secret spots" where you can layout, jump off boulders, or just be one with nature.
A grist mill sat right where the beach is today. Surrounding the grist mill was a small community with several homes and a handful of stores known as Audra. The community sat on property owned by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.
The state purchased the land in 1948 from B&O, built rustic facilities, then opened the park to the public in 1950. It became a popular place for people from the surrounding areas like Buckhannon and Elkins to cool off in the summer time.
The state purchased more land as the park increased in popularity. Along with the newly obtained land, a better campground was developed to include the bathhouses, playgrounds, and campsites for camper vans.
Audra continues to be a popular place locals to enjoy the outdoors. Whether it's swimming, sunbathing, hiking, camping, fishing, or just driving through, you will have a wild and wonderful time exploring this little slice of "Almost Heaven" West Virginia.
